"Church Lady" was a popular character on Saturday Night Live in the 80's, famous for her saying ”Well, isn't that special?”. She said stuff like “We like ourselves an awful lot, don't we?” or “Isn't that conveeeenient?” And you bet she'd be warning us of the devil's work. When she brings it up the organ plays, thunder sounds, and the stage shakes as she twists her face up, saying ominously “Could it be...... SATAN ?!!!!!?!' Church Lady is super- condescending and patronizing-- that's her shtick. Of course, everyone hates it. Sadly, there's good reason why that high and mighty attitude has been associated with religion. Putting negative judgments on others is so hurtful and divisive. It seems to be no less so when coming from religion than it is when coming from other sources such as spiritual rebels, naysayers and the like. I hope we can all begin to see and turn away from that smugness when it comes up in our own egos too. When it gets mixed up in spiritual matters, it gives off a bad smell that turns people off to spirituality. The cause of spreading Spirit and virtue again then falls behind. Materialism already runs the world-- what hope is there for Spirit? If we truly are spiritual and want to promote its growth, we must connect strongly with our unity and oneness in that area.
