Have you been consumer-ized, mesmerized, hypnotized to become not only a consumer but consumed by shopping and materialism?
Shopping is one of the ways we may look for happiness from outside ourselves. But it isn’t working and actually can cause hardship for ourselves, others and our earth. Over-shopping consumes mass quantities of earth's resources. Over- consumption, especially from certain big businesses, profiteers and corporations supports the money- hungry at the expense of justice to their workers and consumers. Some say we are shopping ourselves and the human race to death.
Money may not buy happiness... But you can't prove it by the actions of most Americans, especially around the Christmas holidays!

Happy Shoppers?
The average American spends one hour a week in spiritual or so- called spiritual activities, 5 hours a week shopping and 20 hours watching television. And many of them aren't very happy while doing most of those activities. Especially around the holidays, shopping can be very stressful for us.
Do you use shopping as recreation, excitement, comfort or to fill an addictive need? Many Americans do. Too bad it doesn't really make us happy. In fact, if we think a little deeper we may not end up enjoying it near as much as we think we do. But in reality the time we once spent shopping can be used for something so much better that truly is healing and fulfilling.

A High Cost
“Recreational”, unnecessary consumerism sucks up vast amounts of energy and resources, creating millions of tons of waste, contributing to climate change, ozone-depleting gases, etc. Our buying creates profits and incentives for more of the same, more overproduction and marketing and often unfair, even dangerous labor practices that cause human suffering. The products of big corporations often suck money from the communities they’re in, impoverishing them and shutting down the mom and pop stores that once supported local economy. We may not appreciate such reminders, but the cleaner we can live our lives, the cleaner we will inside and the more we can contribute to the building a better world.

In the U.S., consumerism has become the dominant culture. Its clearly unsustainable. Reverend Billy’s Church of Stopping Shopping says we must cut back on unnecessary spending and abandon big corporations products for a more compassionate way wherein consumption is of local products and supports the local economy. That is, we must convert consumer consciousness into community consciousness-- its a conversion worth supporting!
The Deception of Consumerism
The deceptions promoted by commercialism include ideas that:
(1) You, your needs and your happiness is the most important thing in the universe.
(2) Happiness must come from something outside of us.
(3) Stuff and more stuff will make you happy.

Happy Inside
Marketers don’t want us to know that we have a happy spirit naturally, that happiness must come from inside and that no amount of consumer goods can fill the “God- sized” hole inside us that's created in the dearth of spirit and loving connection. Buying can bring on a high, but it doesn’t last for long.
The December holidays generate a lot of shopping and looking to material goods for satisfaction and expressing love. Our holiday page offers healthy ideas to share with others, along with a quiet moment, to help in getting through an often stressful season.
